Emmett Aldred

Emmett's Aldred’s directorial practice ardently celebrates and critiques notions of gender.

His practice utilises a resourceful filmmaking approach with the aim to liberate filmmaking from social and economic restraints, and in doing so, make space for a greater diversity of voices on screen.

In 2015 Aldred’s gender transition presented barriers in the local making industry which gave flight to his passion for platforming and curation. Emmett now works on tilde - the Trans and Gender Diverse Film Festival and the Dead End Film Festival along with contributing to the 2019 selection committee for the Melbourne Queer Film Festival. More recently he established a conceptual but functional equipment 'hire store' called Too Much World, after Hito Steryl's essay by the same name.

Embracing filmmaking academia and adjacent techniques has become a necessary path to generate and platform work that mitigates hierarchies within screen industries. His latest narrative shorts can be forwarded upon request and his short documentary Desperately Seeking Shavers can be watched on ABC iVew.
