Compassionate Grounds Part 3: Chaco Kato
30 November, 2022 - 14 January, 2023
Ten years on from the devastating 2011 earthquake, tsunami and nuclear crisis on the Tōhoku coast in Japan, this project is a curated display of screen-based artworks by Japanese and Japanese-Australian artists responding to survivors’ irreversible losses over the past decade. The works, whether responding from afar or directly capturing Tōhoku’s transformed landscapes, focus on the concept of recovery for its displaced communities.
Part 3 of this multipart project features work by Chaco Kato. Kato is a Melbourne-based Japanese-Australian artist whose practice is often intertwined with the Slow Art Collective. Kato’s installation, made in response to the themes of Compassionate Grounds, expresses unfixed, uncertain feelings associated with the Tōhoku region via a constantly flowing vertical landscape rendered in glowing thread and projected colour. The work’s composition is the only recorded piece by the artist's recently passed dear friend Tetsuo Hirata.
The project is curated by Emily Wakeling and presented in partnership with Composite and Metro Arts. This project has been assisted by the Australian Government through Australia Council, its arts funding and advisory body, plus support from Bus Projects and Metro Arts.
