Wildwood, NJ (Ruth Leitman and Carol Weaks Cassidy, 1994) is screening as part of Documentary Meets 2.01 on 21st April, 7pm. Documentary
Shot on warm and fuzzy Super-8 in the summer of 1994, this cult gem of a documentary – a favourite flick of Lana Del Rey, no less – takes viewers back in time and along the boardwalk of the Jersey Shore’s preeminent blue collar beach resort town. Directors Ruth Leitman and Carol Weaks Cassidy and their small, all-women crew capture bracingly frank and often moving encounters with tween and teen girls pining for independence or perhaps their first whiff of salty summer loving, while their acrylic-nailed elders, poolside in plastic chairs, reflect on the friendships and follies of summers past.
Wildwood, NJ is a bittersweet beach getaway and a potent snapshot of nineties fashions; little wonder it’s beloved of Miss Summertime Sadness herself.
