The Eyes of Tammy Faye

  • Fenton Bailey
  • Randy Barbato

Screening 7pm Friday 3rd December 2021 as part of Documentary Meets 006.

A documentary look through the heavily painted eyes of Tammy Faye Messner, formerly Bakker, a pioneer of televangelism turned unlikely queer icon. Narration by RuPaul traces her rise: from a teen marriage to Jim Bakker, with whom she would first launch a children's TV show (featuring her singing and homemade puppets) and then the hugely popular PTL (“Praise the Lord”/”People that Love”) Network, to the construction of Heritage USA – for a time the third most successful theme park in the United States, behind only Disneyland and Disneyworld – all underpinned by her accepting, non-denominational version of Christianity. Things fall apart as money and marital woes mount: Tammy turns to pills – and Jerry Falwell takes PTL. When Jim goes to prison for fraud, she remarries, finds herself alone again, yet remains unsinkable, with her faith, and her makeup, as her armour through it all.
